The State of Urban Safety in South Africa Report has found Johannesburg is one of the most dangerous metros in Gauteng, while Cape Town is the robbery and murder capital of South Africa.
SACN's 2018/2019 report highlights disaggregated crime statistics from the country's nine metro municipalities.
SACN researcher Siphelele Ngobese says the report is an objective outcome to bridge the research gap on what’s happening in terms of the crime environment in cities.
“It needs us to look closely at what the dynamics and drivers are, because in some census Johannesburg is the most dangerous city. But if you drill down and actually look at the data it’s not so. I think perception counts for a lot.”
Ngobese says while cities in South Africa and globally present a lot of opportunities, people’s safety should be a priority as it can drive fear into residents and have a knock-on effect forcing them to retreat from public life.
