The head of journalism at the Aliah University in India says the top five revenue-generating monuments in India have all been built by Muslim rulers.
Professor Mohammad Reyaz was speaking to Radio Islam from Calcutta on Friday about the monuments that have earned more than Rs 146.05 crore in 2017 and 2018.
Fringe Hindu groups and some BJP leaders may have sought to belittle their significance of the monuments but official data is clear about their attraction to tourists.
Reyaz says there is nothing new about the reports which have been available for some time.
“These reports are coming up in media because of the recent controversy and this new decision by the Supreme Court on Babri Masjid. But this is something which people in India have known, have acknowledged for years, for decades in fact.”
The Taj Mahal which was built by Shah Jahan for his wife Noor Jahan and has been controversially excluded from an Uttar Pradesh tourism booklet continues to be the highest earner at Rs 56.83 crore.
The top revenue generating monuments include the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Qutub Minar, Fatehpur Sikri and Red Fort among others.
