It is back to school today for hundreds of thousands of South African pupils after a long December break.
The new academic year is a gift of a fresh start and new beginnings for many pupils as they embark on their journey of learning.
Parents and pupils were overjoyed for the first day of school after they braved online admissions and spent exorbitant amounts on school uniforms and stationary.
While there was a jovial atmosphere at Al Aqsa Nursery and Pre-School in Lenasia, some parents and children were teary-eyed.
Grade R Teacher Adeela Ahmed says she is excited about inspiring the minds of the young learners.
“These children have been given to me as an amaanat from Allah. So basically to make sure that they strive, they do their best, they’re comfortable, they’re happy and they have mothers to take care of them in Al Aqsa Pre-School.”
Parent Faheem Cassim whose daughter did not want to leave his side and was crying says he also shed tears.
“I’m very heart sore. It’s like leaving your child after five years being with you and its quite traumatic.
Gauteng MEC for education, Panyaza Lesufi has given assurances that his department is ready for the new school year.
