KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating a case of attempted murder after the son of late religious scholar Ahmed Deedat was shot in Verulam.
It’s understood 65-year-old Yousuf Ahmed Deedat was walking towards the Verulam family court with his wife on Wednesday when he was approached by an unknown Indian man who drew a firearm and shot him in the head.
Police say the motive for the shooting is not known and the investigation into the incident is continuing.
“The victim was rushed to the hospital for medical attention. The suspect drove away to an unknown direction.”
Mbele has appealed to anyone with information about the shooting to contact the police.
Meanwhile Deedat’s family has released a statement dispelling rumours that he had passed away.
Social media was awash yesterday with users and some media houses posting fake news that Yousuf had succumbed to his injuries.
In the statement, Yousuf’s son Raees says his father is in a critical condition in hospital.
“While his injuries are severe, we remain hopeful for Mr Deedats recovery. The next 48 hours are vital for his recovery as he receives the best medical care available.”
The family has thanked the Muslim community and public for their support and have requested that their privacy be respected during this traumatic period.
