The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) says it’s deeply concerning that former President Jacob Zuma’s sick note which was submitted in court was allegedly tampered with.
Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Dhaya Pillay issued a surprise warrant of arrest against Zuma on Tuesday in order to secure his court appearance.
This follows Zuma’s non-appearance before the high court, where he was to face a barrage of questions linked to the alleged corruption emanating from the multi-billion arms deal with co-accused French arms company Thales.
OUTA’s Stefanie Fick says the document submitted by Zuma’s lawyer Dan Mantsha is not a medical certificate or even a doctor’s sick note, but rather a form that is obtainable at a hospital.
“I think we are all delighted what the judge actually said: ‘but I don’t agree with this, you’re not just gonna get away and expect me to just accept a medical note that is on the face of it doesn’t appear to be really above board.’ Secondly why, if you are really sick, not give the court everything that you can possibly give.”
While a warrant of arrest has been issued against Zuma, it won't be executed before he is due to appear in court again in May. This means the former number one will not be cuffed by police and brought before court by force.
