The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has blocked off part of the M1 Double Decker Highway due to extreme flooding.

Heavy downpours overnight on Friday and Saturday morning have caused major flooding across various parts of the city.

The JMPD’s Wayne Minnaar says motorists can use alternate routes to get back on to the M1 North and South highways.

“If you are travelling in a southerly direction, exit the freeway at Smit Street and drive through the CBD on Simmonds Street to join the M1 again. On the M2, motorists will have to exit at Joe Slovo and drive through the CBD and join the freeway at Houghton.”

Minnaar says officers are monitoring low-lying areas and bridges that may affect motorists.
