Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the number of Coronavirus cases in South Africa has jumped to 709 overnight.
This is an increase of 155 new cases, a 28% increase from Tuesday’s announcement.
Mkhize says at least 50 new positive coronavirus cases have been registered from a church in the Free State.
Gauteng has also recorded 64 new confirmed cases overnight.
Mkhize says Mangaung in the Free State is a cause for concern.
“We want to discourage people moving around during the Easter Weekend. You need to be in the same location over this 3 week period.”
He has urged South Africans not to travel to their home provinces ahead and during the lockdown as this could increase the spread.
Mkhize says the 21-day lockdown imposed in South Africa by President Cyril Ramaphosa is not about the movement of cars, but rather about stopping the mixing of people to reduce the number of infections
