Many people are stocking up at the supermarket amid the Coronavirus pandemic but are you choosing the correct supplies? An emergency preparedness expert with the American Red Cross shared these tips to keep you stocked up for 2 weeks.
In addition to your basic items like milk, preferably the long-life type, you should stock up on non-perishable goods – canned meats, canned vegetables. Foods that are high in energy with a low GI like you rice and pastas. You favourite snack foods are great but in moderation and choose things that I healthy, nuts, raisins, granola bars.
Water is an essential – at least a 3-day supply is recommended especially in an absolute emergency.
More important than toilet paper during the Coronavirus pandemic is tissues as COID-19 is a respiratory tract disease and you will need them.Ensure that your chronic medication prescriptions are up to date as you may not be able to go to a pharmacy or medicines may become in short supply.
Cleaning supplies are important but ensure that you choose items such as disinfectants, bleaches and soaps. You will be cleaning your surfaces often and other areas like your door handles and light switches.
The key thing when purchasing is to look at what basic items are needed, how much you usually use or consume and purchase enough for 2 weeks. And don’t forget to include your pets, if you have them.
So, what happens when someone in the house is confirmed with COVID-19 and you haven’t tested positive?
People should remain separate, in a different room or areas, so as not to spread the infection. Remember to not contact your face too often and wipe all surfaces with disinfectants. All used tissues and other waste items should be put into separate garbage bags for disposal.
If it’s too late and I’m alone in self-quarantine and can’t get to the stores. Have a “buddy” who can pick things up from the stores, pharmacies, etc. and have them drop of the items at your door, ensuring you make limited contacted with them.
Look out for apps that allow you to place orders online and the delivery service can deliver your door but make sure that you keep the courier safe by allowing them drop off your order at the door.
