Residents had to be evacuated from their homes when a petrol tanker overturned and burst into flames at Sasolburg.

ER24 says the incident occurred on Bertus Van Rijn and President Brand streets at around 06:45am.

"Paramedics arrived on the scene and found the flaming tanker lying on its side in a residential area.

the area has been cordoned off and firefighters are on the scene trying to extinguish the fire.

The driver of the tanker has sustained no serious injuries.
