A 42-year-old woman has died while on a hiking trail on Table Mountain in the Western Cape.

Rescue services say they were alerted to an unconscious female who was about 200 meters from the top of Skeleton Gorge on Table Mountain early on Saturday.

Wilderness Search and Rescue’s Johann Marais says the Air Emergency Services (AMS) helicopter contracted by the Health Department was authorised to assist in the rescue.

“A ground crew was deployed to the main entrance of Kirstenbosch botanical Gardens to assist the helicopter. The paramedics were not able to revive the patient and the body was extracted by the helicopter. Another vehicle together with the first team into the Back of Table Mountain brought the rest of the hiking party down the mountain.”

Marais has conveyed condolences to the family and friends of the woman.
