Dealing With Disappointment – Learn How To Take Care of Yourself

4. Learn how to take care of yourself

Many of us are constantly giving to others around us. However, remember that we cannot give from an empty cup or have the strength to overcome disappointments and struggles if we don’t take good care of ourselves. We should take care of our bodies by sleeping well, eating a healthy diet, and of course exercise which has been shown to be just as effective as anti-depressants.

We should learn how to say ’no’ when we need to. And explore what we need to re-charge. Even if you are an extrovert that likes being around people, you will find that you do need time for yourself to relax. Whether it’s time to read, write, draw, exercise, perform Salaah, make Zikr or listen to Quraan, find what works for you and brings you comfort. If you’ve been through a very difficult time, don’t be afraid to seek help; after Allah Ta’aala, ask a loved one or close and trusted friend, join an online support group, or don’t be hesitant to speak to a professional counsellor.

Sometimes we think patience means keeping all our difficulties to ourselves. But Allah Ta’aala hasn’t created us in a vacuum, He’s created us as members of a community. Your mind and body are a trust given to you by Allah. So knowing when to seek help to take care of yourself is a way of honouring that trust from Him.

Remember, you are not a disappointment
Just because you may have been disappointed, had a setback or made a mistake and disappointed someone else doesn’t mean that you are a disappointment or failure. And this situation that you’re in right now won’t last forever. Even if it might feel that way today.

The truth is:
* Just because you were disappointed today or you disappointed someone doesn’t mean that you’ll be or do that tomorrow or the next time.

* This does not label you as a disappointment (unless you choose to put that label on yourself).

* If you keep moving forward and you keep taking action, then you’ll move on and you’ll improve.
