COVID-19 Deaths Pass 2,000 Mark, Infections Jump to 106,108

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 106,108

This is an increase of 4,518 from Monday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 111 bringing the total to 2,102.

The Western Cape has the most infections with 53,212 followed by Gauteng at 24,041, Eastern Cape at 18,108 KwaZulu-Natal 5,625, Free State 814, North West 2,454, Mpumalanga 662, Limpopo 622, Northern Cape 270 and unallocated infections 0.

The total number of recoveries to date is 55,045 this translates to a recovery rate of 51,9%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 1,382,772 this is an increase of 29,596 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably, we report a further 111 COVID-19 related deaths- 1 from Mpumalanga, 4 from KwaZulu Natal, 28 from Eastern Cape and 78 from Western Cape. This brings the total deaths to 2102. The mortality rate is 2%.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
