Criminals Now Using Social Media to Swindle Consumers

The SA Banking and Risk Information Centre (Sabric) has warned that criminals are now using social media to swindle consumers out of their money this festive season.

Sabric says it has seen an increase in the number of social media profiles being hacked where criminals either took control of the person’s account by hacking into it or by impersonating the victim.

It says criminals are masters of social engineering and know how to exploit human vulnerabilities to perpetuate crimes, particularly over the festive season when victims tend to let their guard down.

Last month, Sabric said that there had been a 64% higher incident rate of digital banking crime compared to 2017.

Sabric’s Susan Potgieter says consumers need to protect themselves this festive season as everybody is vulnerable.

“The trick is to make sure that you stay abreast of what criminals are doing and that you really use the tips that are put out by our social media platforms and that your bank provides, so that you are empowered to actually identify when you are being accosted by somebody who’s not who they purport to be.”
