Gauteng acting health MEC Jacob Mambolo says the grim increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country is worrying, adding that “modellers” have indicated that a second surge of the pandemic is imminent.

Mamabolo was addressing health workers at Tshwane District Hospital and Steve Biko Academic Hospital on Wednesday.

The MEC’s address forms part of the provinces participation in the national five days of mourning from 25 to 29 November to pay tribute to victims of COVID-19 and to remember victims of gender-based violence (GBV) as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this month.

Ramaphosa said that during this period the national flag would fly at half-mast throughout the country from 6am to 6pm.

Gauteng Health Department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says Mamabolo said that one of the best ways to honour the memory of those who have died from COVID-19 is to vow to never let our guard down in an effort to stop the spread of the Coronavirus.

“He did indicate that at this stage, we are seeing a lot of cases of COVID-19. Modellers have advised that that the second surge of COVID-19 is imminent upon us. Therefore it is incumbent upon all of us to ensure that we continue observing the COVID-19 protocols.”

Modiba says Mamabolo also brought attention to GBV as the country observes 16 days against Gender-based Violence (GBV), which started on Wednesday.

“He remarked that it is important that during this period that we all ensure that government working together with various stakeholders intensifies efforts to put an end to put an end to gender-based violence in our communities.”

In Gauteng, about 4,989 people have died as a result of COVID-19 while the Gauteng Health Department has lost 45 employees to date.
