The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa has announced that Muslims are permitted to be inoculated with the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

In a statement, the Jamiat says its own studies in addition to consultations with the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa including other professionals and stakeholders satisfies the various considerations that are taken into account under Shari‘ah.

“On the basis of the information acquired so far pertaining to the ingredients and production processes of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa is of the view that the formulation of the vaccine is permissible to a Muslim to have it administered.”

The Jamiat SA however has advised Muslims to seek advice from Muslim medical specialists, on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine, taking into account one’s specific health and medical condition.

On Friday the Health Department said that the Johnson & Johnson vaccines being administered to health workers were technically and legally part of a study.

Deputy Health Minister Joe Phaahla said earlier tests had shown excellent results against the South African variant, which was why the department was rolling it out to health workers.

“So, the approval is already there for the human trials, so this vaccine is already, in terms of this report, is as a result of vaccine injections to South Africans and therefore we’re able to have this report.”

Jamiat SA also shared a hadith by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) about remedies pertaining to illness.

“Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) narrates that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: ‘For every illness there is a medicine. When a remedy is used, then a person becomes cured by the consent of Allah.’” (Muslim)

South Africa currently has more than 1.5 million Coronavirus infections while 50,566 people have succumbed to the virus.

The recovery rate is at 94.6%, meaning that more than 1.4 million have recovered.
