Johannesburg Emergency Services have urged residents to take precautions following reports by the SA Weather Service of adverse weather conditions in Gauteng.

The weather bureau has alerted residents of the province it is set to experience severe thunderstorms late Wednesday afternoon and overnight.

It confirmed that the Western Highveld of Mpumalanga and Western Bushveld of Limpopo will also be hit by thunderstorms.

The weather service further says possible impacts as a result of the thunderstorms include temporary low level flooding, and strong winds that might cause damage to informal settlement structures.

Johannesburg Emergency Services Robert Mulaudzi says they will be on standby and remain on high alert for any eventualities or emergencies.

“Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit most parts of the city of Johannesburg. Residents are urged to be safe, especially our motorists to exercise caution while driving. Also our residents in our low lying areas, mostly our informal settlements to be vigilant, try and avoid crossing flooded bridges or flooded roads so that we can able to prevent drowning incidents.”

According to the SAWS, the cold weather conditions are expected to  continue until Friday, 2 October.
