Political analyst Ebrahim Fakir says it is very surprising that UDM leader Bantu Holomisa has called for an “interim government” when there is a legitimately elected government in place.
Fakir was speaking to Radio Islam on Friday during the ASRI report.
Holomisa called for the ruling African National Congress (ANC) to relinquish power and an interim government to run the country until the 2024 general elections.
Fakir says the proposal by Holomisa for an interim government is a bad idea.
“If we accept the generals logic, it means every time we are unhappy about something, we will suddenly intervene and say let’s just have an interim government, you’ll be perpetually having interim governments. In this case there are sufficient processes in the governance architecture, there is enought oversight mechanisms. Those things have to work and if they don’t, you vote the buggers out of office.”
Fakir says because the current ANC government is doing a bad job of running the country, it does not mean that power can be usurped.
“What they need to do internally that is their business, why should we make it ours. They were elected as a government, they must operate the government. Because they are doing so badly, it doesn’t mean we can get rid of them. I was actually surprised that it got the news that it did and I suspect it is merely the general trying to get some airtime seeking relevance.”
Fakir also shared updates about the IEC briefing Parliament on the local government elections and Tony Leon’s comment about former Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane being “an experiment [that] went wrong” when he was elected as leader of the DA in 2015.
