The editor-and-chief and founder of the Bhekhisa Centre for Health Journalism says while the Coronavirus infections continue to soar in South Africa, the country will not experience harsher lockdowns to avoid the impact on the economy.

Mia Malan was speaking to Radio Islam on Monday following the “family meeting’ by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday on developments in the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ramaphosa announced that the country will move to an adjusted level 2 of the lockdown to stop the spread of the Coronavirus in South Africa.

Malan says harsher lockdowns will depend on how South Africans behave and adhere to the COVID-19 protocols.

“When I say how well we behave, whether we stick to the lower numbers of people indoors and whether we wear masks and social distancing. I think the other thing that he pointed out is how bad this third wave is going to be. It’s really going to depend on how much contact each of us have with other people who are potentially infected and how well we adhere to these measures.”

Malan says  it’s unclear what will happen with the  schooling academic curriculum now that the country has moved to an adjusted level 2 lockdown.

“What we know is that there is a restriction on contact sports up until now. It’s a decision that’s going to rest with the education department on whether you have distance schooling again over Zoom. I think the things that are taken into consideration is a huge disruption of schooling in particularly public schools where many children didn’t have access internet for Zoom schooling.”

Malan says it is very difficult to gauge how long the third wave will last adding that it depends on many variables including peoples behavior and the current implementation of COVID-19 protocols.
