The Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) says South Africans are living in fear due to the escalation of crime in the country.

The Victims of Crime Survey 2018/2019 report shows that South Africans are no longer safe in their own homes, a situation which the institution says points “to a country that is undergoing severe trauma”.

The CSVR says the home is supposed to be a place of refuge, but is under attack.

Speaking to Radio Islam, the CSVR’s Steven Rebello says the report made a number of key findings.

“There seems to be an increase in the amount of housebreakings and burglary. There has been a decrease a number of sexual assaults reported, but increases reporting of sexual assaults to the South Africa police services which we see as some something that’s quite prominent.”

Rebello says there is also a link between the high crime rate and the rise in children committing violent acts.

“Whatever happens in schools is a really a reflection of what’s happening in our community and as a country as a whole. So I don’t think the children are immune to what they might see in a community, perhaps in their homes an d at a national level as well.”

Rebello says Statistic South Africa uses CSVR’s research to compare studies they have conducted with crime stats in different areas.
