The Educators Union of South Africa (EUSA) says the leak of another matric exam paper is not shocking at all and expect worse things to happen.

The Council of Education Ministers held an urgent meeting yesterday after it emerged that the Physical Sciences Paper 2 was leaked and circulated ahead of the writing of the paper.

This follows the leak of the Maths Paper 2 last week.

The KwaZulu-Natal education department also confirmed that an investigation has been launched into allegations that schools on the South Coast had access to Maths Paper 1 before the exam was written on 12 November.

Spokesperson for the Educators Union of South Africa, Kabelo Mahlobogwane says they are not surprised by the leaks of the matric papers.

“In basic education, especially under the incompetent administration that leads basic education now. We actually suspect that it is possible that the exam paper was actually leaked by the department itself in order to try and save itself from the  embarassament of  higher failure rate that may happen because of how schools were managed during COVID-19.”

Mahlobogwane says there will be no accountability by the education department.

“The department is just making a public statement just to give everyone of us something to speak about. But nothing will happen we can promise you, no report will come out, no one will be held accountable. Everyone is going to move on and the minister is going to announce the matric results next year as it has been the case every year with the results that are announced by our government.”

In a statement the Basic Education Department says the investigations into the leaked exams papers are at an advanced stage and details on the progress of the probe will be made public at the right time while areas of possible weakness have been identified.

Mahlobogwane says they advised the department in May to scrap the 2020 academic year and take the matriculants to a “matric camp” where they would be able to “catchup and write proper exams.”
