[LISTEN] How Muslim Voters in the US Elections Tipped the Results in Key Swing States

As the US Presidential race draws to a close, the Director of Government Affairs Department at the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) says 69% of Muslim voted for Joe Biden.

An exit poll conducted by Cair shows Muslim voters turned out in “record-breaking numbers” with more than one million American Muslims participating in the 2020 US election.

Speaking to Radio Islam from the USA, Cair’s Robert McCaw says over 800 Muslim households responded to the poll.

“We found that 69% of Muslim voters indicated they voted for Joe Biden and that 17% indicated they voted for Donald Trump. We also had 11% that didn’t want to reveal who they voted for which makes us think they were shy Trump voters and Trump could’ve received upwards of about 25% of the Muslim vote.”

McCaw explained why 17% of Muslims voted for President Donald Trump.

“When you ask those Muslims why they are voting for Republicans, it’s usually about financial issues, tax issues, and healthcare issues. These are at the top of Republican Muslim voters priorities. But when you talk to Democratic voters, they are more concerned with civil rights, Islamophobia, healthcare and education.”

McCaw says Muslim votes in Michigan gave Biden the edge to win the state.

“The election itself was easily within a margin of the Muslim voting population. When it gets down to several thousand votes like it did in Michigan, you can really see that Muslim voters, especially those in urban centres, they were the ones voting more for Biden and that’s what really put him over the edge. So there’s a story to be said how Muslim voters in key swing states can tip the results.”

McCaw says a poll that Cair conducted a month before the elections revealed that 46% of Muslim voters are conservative and an equal 46% consider themselves socially liberal adding that Muslim voters are split depending on the candidate.
