At least two hundred people gathered at the Flame of Democracy at the Constitutional Court to reaffirm their support for the constitution and the rule of law.

Last week leaders from all sectors of society announced the launch of the Defend our Democracy campaign.

The campaign is a call to action to people around the country to reject what the campaign leaders call the anti-constitutional conduct of former president Jacob Zuma.

The group has lashed out at Zuma  for defying the Constitutional Court’s order that he appear before the Zondo Commission of Inquiry to give his side of the state capture story.

The Executive Director of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Neeshan Balton says supporters of the constitution gathered at the Flame of Democracy to help vigorously defend the Constitution in light of Zuma’s recent defiance.

“South Africans gathered to reaffirm their support for the constitution, the rule of law and for accountability, not only by former President Zuma, but for all of those who are intent on causing mayhem and destruction in this country.”

Balton says the actions Zuma and the defenders of the former president is a threat our democracy and constitution.

“When you defy the rulings of a court and particularly that of the Constitutional Court and if that becomes the norm of the day, justice will in fact come to a halt in this country so that every person who has to appear in court will now defy and will simply mean that nobody will be held accountable.”

The Constitutional Court will this week hear an application for a contempt of court order brought by the Zondo commission against  Zuma.
