[LISTEN] Lenasia Community Distributes Much Needed Food Aid to Thembelihle Informal Settlement During Lockdown

As the country marks the 13th day of the national lockdown to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, Masjid-e-Hamza and the Lenasia Extension 9 Welfare Committee has come to the assistance of the less fortunate by assisting them with much needed food parcels.

The lockdown has had an impact with many people being required to work from home and also on the economy with two ratings agencies downgrading South Africa to junk status.

However, it’s poorer communities that have been feeling the brunt of the lockdown which has had an impact on their economic viability and the ability to put on the table for their families.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Masjid-e-Hamza’s Ml Abrarul Haq Essack says the initiative is specifically for COVID-19 relief and was distributed to about five hundred families.

“We have constantly been in contact with the Thembelihle Crisis Committee who works with various organizations inside the camp. They painted a very bleak picture of what is actually going with the people, food items were short, people were going hungry, children were going hungry. That when we sat down, the Extension 9 Welfare Committee and decided it’s our moral responsibility that we do something for this people.”

Ml Essack says the response from the Lenasia community has been overwhelming and urged people to continue donating towards the initiative.
