A government contractor in charge of locust control in Graff-Reinet the size of the swarm of locusts moving through the grasslands outside the Eastern Cape town of Graaff-Reinet has never been seen before in South Africa.

A new video shows and unending mass of locusts darkening the sky.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Philip Kemp says the local locust population has surged since the beginning of March.

“That size of swarms, no never. I’ve spread since the 1980’s and this is the first time the size of the swarm is like this now. It’s very, very big.”

Kemp says the locusts can cause extensive damage to crops in just an hour.

“A chap phoned me now and said all his crops, there’s nothing left.”

According to the United Nations, a locust swarm one square kilometer in size can eat the same amount of food in a day as 35,000 people.
