The Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı (Presidency of Religious Affairs) together with the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa and the Al Tawheed Islamic Centre have distributed more than five hundred Ramadan food packets benefiting about two thousand five hundred needy and poor families.

The Ramadan food hampers was handed over to the families in Katlehong in Ekurhuleni near Palmridge on Saturday.

The initiative forms part of Turkey’s 2021 Ramzani Programmi to assist those in need, especially during the blessed month of Ramadan.

The programme was attended by Turkish Ambassador to South Africa Elif Çomoğlu Ülgen, Secretary of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa Ml Ebrahim Bham, Ustaadh Ahmed Yilmaz from the Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı and Sheikh Ahmad Jamal from the Al Tawheed Islamic Centre.

Ambassador Elif says Ramadan is a month of reflection echoing the spiritual moments of caring and sharing with each other.

“This is my fifth Ramadan that I am witnessing Alhamdulillah in South Africa on this beautiful gifted land. On each of those Ramadan’s I had the pleasure and happiness and the gratitude to Allah Almighty that as the Turkish government, we were able to share our food with some of our brothers and sisters.”

Ustaadh Yilmaz who just arrived in South Africa conveyed the salutations of the Turkish people to the recipients of the food packets.

Ustaadh Yilmaz says Turkish citizens are honoured to support their Muslim brothers and sisters in need.

“The Religious Foundation of Turkey has arranged this aid. Our partners locally are the Jamiatul Ulama, we thank them very much, may Allah be pleased with them. The Religious Foundation of Turkey gives similar type of aid all over the world in addition to South Africa.”

Ml Bham thanked all the attendees, adding that it is Allah alone that provides us the ability to do righteous deeds.

“We plead to the almighty that He must accept from us our humble initiative and endeavour for us to make this assistance available to you. We would like to thank Diyanet and all of those who were involved in this initiative and endeavour of assistance. To be at the assistance of another, human being is at the very core of our Islamic teachings.”

Sharing a hadeeth, Ml Bham says Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: He is not a believer who sleeps satiated and full while people in his neighbourhood are hungry… The best of people are those who are of benefit to humanity.”
