[LISTEN] Natasha Mazzone: South Africa a Pressure Cooker Waiting to Explode

Faizel Patel – 14/10/2020

As tensions remain high in Senekal Democratic Alliance (DA)Chief Whip Natasha Mazzone says Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and MP Nazier Paulsen were reckless in social media posts relating to tensions in the Free State town.

This has led to the DA filing criminal charges against the EFF leader and Paulsen.

Mazzoni says they had to act as the tweets could be constituted as a call for violence.

“I think the country, we can compare it to a pressure cooker and we are at a point where the pressure is so high, it requires one wrong move and the valve is going to burst. The violence we saw erupting in Senekal is an indication of the level of trauma that people are going through in our country. We are all living in constant fear for our own lives, for that of our children, for our wives, our daughters and our mothers and our sisters.”

Mazzoni says the big fear is that Malema has called on his members to attack before.

“When he’s called on them, they have answered him. We saw H & M stores, a lot of destruction. We saw most recently Clicks stores being petrol bombed, stores being destroyed, a disruption of work, the intimidation of customers and workers. So we know that these threats carry some validation to him.

Mazzone says she believes Malema is being treated with kid gloves because as a former ANC Youth League leader during the Jacob Zuma era he may undoubtedly know “a lot of secrets that are meant to stay secret”.
