KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Jay Naicker has urged women never to trust anybody that they meet on social media.
Naicker was speaking to Radio Islam on Monday following the discovery of a charred body, believed to be that of a woman on the roadside in Mthwalume on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.
Parliament’s portfolio committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities says they are horrified by the incidences of gender-based violence that have been reported as Women’s Month draws to an end.
Naicker says criminals prey on vulnerable women seeking employment, especially on social media platforms like Facebook where job vacancies are advertised.
“Women should be very careful. They should follow the right channels because if there is jobs out there they advertise in the media for example, they should checkup before hand. They should not allowed to be lured to isolated areas by these serial killers and rapists.”
Naicker says the discovery of the woman in Mthwalume is not linked to the case of the remains of women that were found.
“It does not fit any of the modus operandi of the serial killer who committed suicide few weeks ago. As you know, we discovered about five bodies in that area and it was linked to a serial killer who was operating in the area. He was subsequently arrested and however he committed suicide after making a confession to police and doing a pointing out.”
Naicker says while the attacks on women and children are sadly inflicted upon them by someone that they know and trust, he has urged people to report any incident to police as soon as possible.
