[LISTEN] Prof Salim Abdool Karim: South Africans Behaviour or Mutation of Coronavirus Will Determine if South Africa Experiences Severe Third Wave

World-renowned SA epidemiologist Professor Salim Abdool Karim says South Africa should be very concerned about COVID-19 situation in India.

Professor Karim was speaking to Radio Islam on Thursday about joining the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) science council and South Africa’s Coronavirus outlook.

Professor Karim served as co-chair of the inter-ministerial advisory committee on the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 in South Africa.

Professor Karim says the COVID-19 situation in India is very complicated, adding that there are three issues, which led the country to be number two in the world and posting record-breaking COVID-19 infections.

“They thought that they had achieved herd immunity and they became complacent. The prime minister announced that they had conquered the Coronavirus. The second is they created super-spreading events whether they were religious festivals or political activities. The third for me which is the cardinal sin is that learning from their first wave, they didn’t prepare and the main preparation they didn’t do was that they did not ensure that they had adequate oxygen.”

Professor Karim says oxygen saves lives.

He says that if South Africa gets a new variant of the Coronavirus, the third wave could be very severe.

“We should try and avoid a third wave and the key thing to that is the way we behave. So we can’t control a mutation, but we can control how we behave. So there are only two factors that will principally determine when and if we have a third wave, our behaviour and a new mutation.”

Professor Karim says South Africa is doing quite well in terms of respecting the COVID-19 protocols with the exception of about one out five people not wearing masks and some other minor violations of the regulations.
