The Public Servants Association has called for the closure of all Limpopo schools saying they are not compliant to stop the spread of COVID-19 among learners.

Several teacher unions have warned before the reopening of schools that many schools across the country are not ready.

Speaking to Radio Islam, the Public Servants Association Reuben Maleka says they did an assessment and found that most of the Limpopo schools that have opened, are without water and proper sanitation needed to contain the spread of the coronavirus and promote good hygiene practices.

“We have done an assessment province by province and at this moment, given the extent of non-compliance by schools in Limpopo, hence we are calling on all Limpopo schools to shutdown to avoid any disaster that is going to happen.”

Maleka says Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga’s call to reopen schools was premature.

“We don’t know what actually gave the minister expert advice to open the schools. We believe it’s time that we get to know these experts that seems to be giving her wrong advice.”

Maleka says while they have a plan to save the academic year, schools cannot be save at the expense of learners lives adding that schools must open  the year in October and close in June 2021.
