Religious leaders have called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to take harsh steps against all those who are involved in corruption in the country.

Ramaphosa conducted a virtual meeting with a contingent of religious leaders including Ulama from the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa, the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) and the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) on Wednesday.

The African National Congress (ANC)’s national executive committee (NEC) met over the weekend where its leaders resolved that the party would tackle corruption within its ranks.

Ramaphosa said the NEC agreed that this would be a turning point in the fight against corruption.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Jamiat SA Secretary General Ml Ebrahim Bham says religious leaders including the Ulama expressed their concerns about the growing corruption and police brutality in South Africa.

“It called upon the government and it called upon the president to take harsher steps in this regard as these matters are draining the country economically, morally and ethically.”

Ml Bham says the Ulama contingent also took the opportunity to express their concerns about the growing Islamophobic sentiments across the country, which also resulted in a high court ruling banning the athan or Islamic call to prayer in Isipingo Beach.

“It called upon the government to take note, with regard to these matters and also to take serious action against such sentiments and statements. The religious leaders including the Ulama called upon the government to further ease regulations with regards to religious congregations.”

Ml Bham says Ramaphosa acknowledged the concerns by religious leaders and promised to respond in due course.
