The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group says starving South Africans are now paying nearly 5% more for a basic food basket compared to seven months ago.

The groups Mervyn Abrahams was speaking to Radio Islam about its latest Household Affordability Index.

The survey tracks food prices in 44 supermarkets including 30 in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg and Springbok.

Abrahams says key data has revealed that basic foodstuff continue to increase.

“We’ve see over the past month on month an increase of about R38.39 or 1% of the basket which now means that the basket of forty-four foods for a household of seven is now standing at R4,039.56.”

Abrahams says the increases are on core foods that women say they must buy every month.

“Things like maize meal, rice, sugar, cooking oil, frozen chicken, brown bread. There’s been a slight drop in the price of potatoes and onions, but a massive steep increase again in the price of tomatoes, pilchards and samp.”

Abrahams say they are expecting the food prices to continue increasing largely off the 27 cents fuel levy and the 15% increase in electricity tariffs.
