Naeem & Suraya’s Relationship Far from Perfect – Suraya’s Sister

The sister of Suraya Deedat who died in a house fire with her four children has told Radio Islam, the marriage between Naeem and Suraya was far from rosy and loving.

Suraya and her children aged 6 months to four years-old died of smoke inhalation after one of the children’s pillows fell onto an electric heater in their room at their Ormonde home in July 2011.

Naeem was the sole survivor.

An inquest into the fire and whether Naeem was allegedly responsible for his family’s death is being heard in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court.

On Thursday Naeem’s sister Hasina told the Johannesburg Magistrates Court she was very close to the family and unaware of any tension between the couple.

However Suraya’s sister Rehana says the relationship between Naeem and Suraya was far from perfect.

“In the beginning it wasn’t bad, it was a good relationship. After the first child that was born, that was Muhammad Uzair, after he was born, that’s when the problems started slowly developing. So they did have problems. It was not as Hasina put it, that it was a loveable and problem free happy family relationship. No, it was not like that, especially towards the end.”

Rehana also claims that Naeem allegedly got married eight months after the tragedy rather than one year eight months as mentioned by his family.

The inquest has been postponed to the 16th of April.
