One person has been arrested after a group of at least thirty people went on the rampage in  Durban looting and setting shops alight.

It’s understood the group wanted to march to the Durban City Hall on Monday to hand over a memorandum but police informed them that it was not possible.

Police say while they were engaging the group, another group converged in the city and began looting shops.

Spokesperson Jay Naicker says a case of public violence has been opened and the arrested suspect will also be charged with attempted murder.

“Police officers from Durban Central and Metro police responded. They pursed the group and one suspect was arrested. He attempted to stab police officers during the arrest but was quickly subdued without any injury to any of the arresting officers. Some stolen items were recovered from the arrested suspects.”

Naicker says an operation is underway to identify and arrest other perpetrators involved in the rampage.
