Practical Hajj Tips

It is better to pay Travellers checks in Riyals.
Keep copy of receipt in separate place – not with T/Cs
Do not write your physical address on your bags – only postal.
Do not put currency in main luggage.
Take four extra I.D. photographs.
Do not take other peoples shopping list.
Do not be overweight.
Do not speak lies at customs.

JEDDAH
At Jeddah airport you will produce your health card and then your passport, therefore, keep the Tanazul Draft separate.
On landing in Jeddah males and females are separated.
On landing give females their own health card, passport and Tanazul Draft.
Do not worry about your luggage.
After passport control you can source your luggage,
Then hand over your Draft, they will pin vouchers onto the passport.
Meanwhile, your luggage will be taken away where all South African Hujjaj are made to stay at the Hajj terminal until further departure, so do not panic.
At Hajj Terminal there is enough salaat, food, bathroom, money exchange, air line and medical facilities available.
Your passport will be taken away before your departure to either Makkah or Madinah.
If flight going directly to Madinah, then your passport will be taken away at Madinah airport and you will be given two slips of paper there.

General
In all journeys, whether from Jeddah to Madinah, Madinah to Makkah, or Makkah to Jeddah, see that your luggage is loaded onto the bus before boarding it.
Do not carry large sums of money when going to the: Masjid, for Tawaaf, for Sa'ee, in the 5 days of Hajj, at the time of pelting and in any crowded situation.
Leave valuables in safe custody
Have unmovable meeting places in:
Madinah – outside the Masjid.
Makkah – in Mataaf area.
Bir Ali – near permanent fruit stall etc.
Jamarat – under which number air blower.
Sa'ee – near barber shops.
Always carry Hotel card in Madinah and Makkah.
Visit the graveyards of Makkah and Madinah and other normal places of Ziyarah commonly known to people by now.
Do not say "we will meet at 9 PM sharp," say "we will meet in between 9 and 9:15" for example.
There are adequate medical facilities provided by the Kingdom in Jeddah, Madinah, Makkah, Mina, Arafaat, Muzdalifa and on the walking route.
Do not become over friendly with any staff members.
Do not waste time in lobbies of hotels.
Do not miss any Salaat.
Do not seek a ruling from every Moulana you see.
Do not harm, injure or hurt others.
Go to help not to be helped.
Footwear should be used before 5 days.

Madinah
There are adequate shower, wudhu and food facilities at Bir Ali/ Zul Hulaifa / Masjid Shajara.
From Madinah the bus will make various stops, first at Hijri passport control centre remember, adequate Salaat, food and medical facilities are there.
En-route to Makkah will be given food gift from the Kingdom. It is useful on arrival in Makkah.
Try to walk to Quba.
Try to walk to Uhud.
In Madinah Munawwarah, there is a museum which opened recently – very informative – Marhazul Buhuth (Research Centre). Go there with your family and see Madinah during Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) time, and the various stages of development until now.
a) includes information on all the battles fought during Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam)'s time
b) include video film showing the history of Madinah Munawwarah (run by Jordan and Syrian scholars)

Makkah
May carry 30 Riyals during general Tawaaf times.
Know your first entry into the Haram, note the name, number of the door you entered from and which side of the Kaabah you first saw and under which colour exit/entry sign you entered from. If lost meet under this colour board near these signs.
On arrival in Makkah Muassassah officials will give you:
Wrist band.
Slip of paper.
Both are important – the wrist band is generally the same colour of the pole outside the tent in Mina/ Arafaat. Also has physical address of tent in Mina/ Arafaat. The slip of paper, with photo is to be taken by agent to get you a Muassassah card. With this entry into tent in Mina/ Arafaat is allowed.
Masnaul Kiswah – ask your agent or the hotel to arrange a trip for you.  It is open to visitors only on request.
Mat-haf is next to the Masnaul Kiswah (Ghilaf Factory).  You will require one to two hours to spend here and preferably go after Esha Salaah.
In here, you will find the old constructed Zam Zam well, an old Ka''bah door, a pillar used by Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Zubair (R.A.) for inside the Ka''bah.
Visit Mina and see the new construction works at the Jamaraat.  At the big Jamaraat, there is a place about 300 meters away (open space that is now fenced) where Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) met the Ansaar on the occasion of Aqabah.

5 Days

For the five days of Hajj carry maximum 200 Riyals each.
Currency must be in small denominations.
Females must be given their own spending money.
In Mina, know your tent in relation to exit and toilet facilities.
Do not carry half the pharmacy to Mina etc.
Do not carry half the library to Mina etc.
Do not waste time in using the extra facilities in Mina etc.
Do not be concerned about what is happening in other tents, what is been eaten there etc.
Be positive; even in the worst situations.
Carry thermal blanket, thin blanket, sleeping bags, warm sheet – it is cold in Muzdalifa.
