Ramadan, the Month of the Quran

Ramadan has many important distinctions and qualities. Ramadan is known as the Month of the Quran. It is the month of the Quran both in revelation and propagation. In this month the angel Jibril (AS) first descended to Rasool ul Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) carrying the Wahi (Divine Inspiration) or Quran. This was the point source of all greatness and honour. Life without the Quran is like vegetation without water. Quran is a source of true healing and mercy.

Allah says: "And We send down from the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe. And it (the Quran) increases the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers) nothing but loss." Al-Isra 17:82

Allah also says: "And if We send this as a Quran in a foreign language other than, they would have said: ‘Why are not its Verses explained in detail (in our language)? What! (A Book) not in Arabic and (the Messenger) an Arab?’ Say: ‘It (the Quran) is for those who believe, a guide and a healing. And as for those who disbelieve, there is heaviness (deafness) in their ears, and it (the Quran) is blindness for them. They are those who are called from a place far away (so they neither listen nor understand)." Fussilat 41:44

The Quran heals the heart and the soul. Whenever despair or anguish is inflicted on a person, his solace and comfort is surely found in the Quran. It is the guide for those at a loss, it is light in times of darkness. The Quran is a companion in solitude and isolation. The more it is recited, the sweeter it gets. It is the source of strength and truth.

Allah says: "Verily, this Quran guides to that which is most just and right and gives glad tidings to the believers who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a great reward (Paradise)." Al-Isra 17:9

For this reason we see that many of the Salaf (Pious Predecessors) who exert themselves in the recitation of the Quran. Some would complete recite the whole Quran in three days. Others would recite it in seven or ten days. We also notice that in Ramadan this effort was greatly increased. As-Shafi‘ee (ra), Abu Hanifa (ra), and Malik (ra) would complete the recitation of the Quran in its entirety during the month of Ramadan sixty different times.

It is important to point out that the Messenger of Allah (saaw) instructed that the Quran should not be recited in its entirety in less than three days. This verdict is not binding during the month of Ramadan. During Ramadan an individual is asked to recite as much as he can during Ramadan.

The month of Ramadan, the month of Quran, is a time that many Muslims rejuvenate their faith and take heed of the truth sent by Allah to mankind. Muslims turn their attention to Allah, His Orders, and His Words in the Quran. The Quran raises mankind to another level of spirituality, especially during Ramadan. With the recitation and contemplation of the Quran Muslims can begin to bring about an individualistic as well as collective change.

Allah says: "Verily Allah will not change the condition of a people, until they change it themselves." Ar-Ra‘d 13:11

The Quran shows us its importance and our need for it. In fact our need for the Quran and its Laws is as great as our need for water and air. Surely, any nation that forsakes their religion and Book are in fact bringing about there own ruin. For there can be not honor and power without religion.
