What Have South Africans Been Searching for on Google During COVID-19 Lockdown?

While many South Africans are working from home, Google South Africa’s Head of Communications says, people are using the search engine to enter competitions, finding recipes and how to prevent being infected with COVID-19.

Mich Atagana was speaking to eNCA on Wednesday about the internet search trends during the lockdown in South Africa to mitigate the spread of the Coronavirus.

Atagana says South Africans have been very active on Google and the internet.

“In the last couple of weeks, we have noticed that everybody is in some sort of baking competition. There’s a global baking competition especially around banana bread. Some of the stuff we’ve seen South Africans search for is how to make fudge, Malva pudding recipes, banana bread recipes. People are also looking for ways to make homemade alcohol.”

Atagana says Google is also assisting and protecting people from false information and fake news online.

“When you go onto Google, there is a little bar even on You Tube as well that kind of tells you where to go get verifiable right information especially around Coronavirus.”

Atagana people have also searched for “How to Prevent Coronavirus, ways to stay safe and keep safe” using Google.
